Familial Disconnections

DZ: i tell ya, im starting to think families, as close as they are suppose to be, are sometimes the epitome of disconnection

In describing what was my perception of the state of my family, I noted how it seemed like all the isolation that goes on within the family home is so.. ironic; whereas my father had been stating with dogmatic assurance that family will always outlive friends and that through thick and thin one can always depend on bloodlines, the way our house has been reflects otherwise. Is there some rule in the Stubborn Parent Handbook that says silence and indifference is the solution to everything?

I realize that throughout my father's life, perhaps he hasn't had his voice heard, his story told; In reaction to all the outspoken remarks he has been flamed with from all types of people of countless walks of life, he has remained stolid in his silent and civil disobedience. Actually, his solution and reaction has more to do with one-upping his aggressors than in opposing them peacefully. Regardless, I am beginning to undestand the conditioning that may have taken place over the course of 30 years of racial discrimination and ostracification (oh thats a big MW right now). Silence is golden. and so as a Chinese man, he has seemed to place that gum1 bo3 above all else that is treasured. Well, so it seems.

An afterthought: does he push me hard because he wants the family's voice to be heard through any channels possible? I've heard him speak wishfully of having a future Asian/Chinese political entity as an aside during conversations about SF Chinese history. In times as those, where people casually spit something that they want but don't expect to be in their hands, those are times when I want to present it to them the most. I can give someone a coloring book, headphones, hachimaki - but how do I give someone hope for the future? Tough one.

To my Father, the Great Communicator.

Cheers,

It takes a strong person to wade through tides that continually crash against his stern body; It's not easy deflecting the manipulative powers that be. To continue on the journey with pride and belief in heart and mind while surrounded by the wake of apathy and corruption - that says a lot.
